Research materials are collected during the spring and fall migration at the ornithological biological station, Malyi Chan Lake, Zdvinsky region. About 300-400 of the ducks, geese and other wild birds’ cloacal swabs are collected annually. Material comes to the SRC VB VECTOR for analysis and the influenza viruses’ extraction.

About 300-400 of the ducks, geese and other wild birds’ cloacal swabs are collected annually. Material comes to the SRC VB VECTOR for analysis and the influenza viruses’ extraction.
Defined as H5 isolate was extracted out of the single sample collected on August 2003. Influenza virus of H5 group caused the “chicken flu” outbreak in the South-Eastern Asia. Therefore an additional research was carried out for more exact identification of the extracted isolate.
Conducted research showed that the influenza virus’ isolate extracted from the migratory birds at the SRC VB VECTOR differs essentially from the pathogenic for domestic fowl strain H5N1 circulating in China and in the South-Eastern Asia countries.
Influenza virus monitoring is carried out at the SRC VB VECTOR in association with the Institute of Animal Systematics and Ecology (SB RAS) since the year 2002.
